Expert care with small incisions and an individualized recovery plan.
If you have been diagnosed with gallstones, it is natural to have questions. Many patients go home the day after laparoscopic surgery. I am Dr. Luis Zavala, with more than 11 years of advanced laparoscopic surgery experience.
What is the gallbladder and why do stones form?

The gallbladder is a small sac below the liver that stores bile, which helps digest fats. Gallstones may form when substances in bile become concentrated. Family history, excess weight, diabetes and hormonal changes are among associated factors.
- Being female, especially after pregnancy or hormone use.
- Overweight, obesity or rapid weight loss.
- Family history, diabetes or high cholesterol.
How can I tell if I have a gallbladder problem?
A common symptom is upper abdominal pain on the right side or near the pit of the stomach, sometimes after fatty meals. It may last minutes to hours and can be accompanied by nausea or pain that spreads to the back. An ultrasound and consultation help identify the cause.
- Bloating, gas or nausea after eating.
- Feeling full or heavy.
- Pain that wakes you at night.
What happens during laparoscopic gallbladder surgery?

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy removes the gallbladder through 3 or 4 small incisions using a camera and general anesthesia. It often takes 45 to 60 minutes. The details and recovery depend on your health and surgical findings.
- Review of your symptoms and ultrasound.
- Lab work and preoperative preparation.
- Recovery and follow-up guided by your medical team.
