What are reflux and a hiatal hernia?
Acid reflux occurs when stomach contents flow back into the esophagus, causing heartburn or a sour taste. A hiatal hernia occurs when part of the stomach moves into the chest and may contribute to reflux.
- Excess weight, especially abdominal weight.
- Hiatal hernia.
- Large meals, late-night meals, smoking, alcohol or coffee.
How is reflux evaluated and treated?
Laparoscopic fundoplication returns the stomach to its position, closes the hiatus when needed and forms a valve using the upper part of the stomach. Surgery is recommended only after appropriate studies and evaluation.
- Endoscopy and esophageal studies may be recommended.
- Gastric bypass may be considered when reflux occurs with obesity.
- The plan is based on diagnosis and prior surgery.

Frequently asked questions about reflux and hiatal hernia surgery
It usually does not go away on its own. Medication can control symptoms, but does not move the stomach back into place. A medical evaluation determines whether repair is appropriate.
